IT’S OUT THERE, IN HERE, NOV 6 – NOV 29

New artwork by Mark Warren Jacques.

Mark’s not kidding. He really is a silly monkey painting shapes. But believe me, in this world today that is a very remarkable accomplishment because everyone want you to stop doing that and go skating with them, or eat dinner with them, or just talk to them. It’s impossible for any of us to focus on anything long enough to paint a perfect shape and have a pefect idea and then work on it long enough to finish it. Distraction abound and once you have one of these pieces in your home you understand, you’ll be completely inspired to do the same.

ON THE MEND, OCTOBER 2 – NOVEMBER 1

New artwork by Lori D. and Mel Kadel.

It’s about creating art that tells a story. Sometimes that story is about working hard, balancing life, being sad, working through real issues, holding it together, facing the trouble and sometimes it just about having fun and feeding off the beauty that’s all around us.

MIKE PERRY’S GIANT ZINE, JULY 3rd – AUGUST 2nd

People don’t usually read these words so I can write whatever I want and no one will ever call me on it. That said, sh!t I hate Mike Perry!!! He’s produced 2 awesome books (Hand Job and Over&Over) that changed the world of graphic design, I actually can score work because those books made what I do look valuable. He’s a nice guy with round glasses and a beard. Plus he gets to be a designer and an artist!!! But the reason I hate him is because he’s only 27. What the hell will this kid do to the world with his whole life ahead of him. He lives for those who have come before us and he does them honor with each step. Let try to give him some encouragement, eh?

Grass Hut Gang, December 5th – Dec 28th

New work by Apak, Bwana Spoons, Le Merde, Scrappers and Martin Ontiveros

Portland, Oregon’s art scene is a lot like it’s music scene. Small, diverse and more vibrant and then a rainbow on psychedelic mushrooms. Portland’s creative community might be the youngest on the west coast, but it’s gaining epic recognition (see Paul Bunyan and the latest issue of XLR8R). At the heart of this creative community, you wont find the desire for fame or fortune, nope all you’ll find are younger folks who just love making things and having fun.
The Grass Hut gang just love to make things and have fun. Maybe that’s why most folks think they are some kind of arts collective? Grass Hut is a physical and mental place where friends build fires under each other’s ideas and encourage each other to make good art.
Grass Hut is made up of APAK, Bwana Spoons, Martin Ontiveros, Le Merde and Scrappers. They are Toy Designers, Painters, Illustrators, Sculptors, Printmakers, Writers and Friends. Together and apart they have been rocking art shows around the world for the past couple years, but they have never had a group show together at home.
The Grass Hut Gang’s first group show at Grass Hut Art Market will be all about having fun and making good art.

We are so lucky to be alive with the folks we are alive with right now. It’s so hard to remember the importance of being present, or the art of living in the moment. Matt Furie, Jay Howell, Dawn Riddle and Matthew Feyld all make art that’s from this moment. It reminds us all how fun and meaningful this life is when we reach out and say “Hi”:) to each other. So take a look at their work and see what I mean…

Andrew Brandou is a flipping wizard in a large cone-shaped hat when it comes to brushwork. He has the skill-set to paint anything in any style he chooses. Lush natural settings, brightly colored flowers, day of the dead, or even Audoban nature/pop art scenery. His more commonly reoccurring characters in the vein of vintage Richard Scarry and Gustaf Tenggren, but always with a twist. His characters look so innocent, but often are doing something a little sinister. Brandou’s work is constantly evolving, so here’s your bug chance to score something special from The Funk Drawer.

DING DANG DONG is a monument to friendship. Here is your chance to see how sweet it is when friends continue to encourage each other to keep up the good work.

The Americans: a group show We kind of let this show curate itself, by simply saying yes to all the folks who were asking to have art here at the Hut. We also invited some of our close friends to help round the show out. It’s pretty crazy and a monument to the difficulty required to sum up American life. At times we’re shallow style driven dorks and at other times we are completely ashamed of ourselves. That said, enjoy the show!

T’n't Tim and Tigerlily Biskup came to us with such a sweet idea for a show we just had to say yes. Papa Biskup and his talented little daughter are hand delivering over 40 original pieces. Tim has been Master of the Art Universe for many world renowned galleries and museums, yet this is Tigerlily’s first show, and even at the tender age of five she is already following suit and exploring her artistic abilities. Tim said, “We’ve been drawing and painting together since [Tigerlily] was able to hold a crayon. We’ve always been inspired by each other’s art, so the idea of doing a show together was inevitable.”

J.Otto Seibold He has made many of us want to use computers, books and art to bring more good into the world. We here at Grass Hut are living proof of his positive influence on the world. It is with total gut-wrenching, tear-jerking honor that we host this show (OMG, no joke). You probably have a book or two of his on your shelf at home. Maybe you read the books to your kids at night, maybe you just flip though them when you’re feeling blue, either way you may have had the thought POP into your head “I sure would like to score an original piece by this guy before I die”. Well…here’s your chance. We got some help from the Ace Hotel on this show.

Balls Out! As in, give it all you have. That’s the theme of this group art show.March 7th (1st Friday) 6-9pmAll the artists involved were giving a panel of wood to paint, ink, felt of do whatever they do best onto. Who are these folks?Grass Hut is also going Balls Out with our grand reopening in the new space (the old Denwave space next door). A bigger space became necessary once the openings became too crammed to see the art. The studio is bigger so Bwana, Scrappers and all the other residents will have more room to grow. The shop inventory is fully stoked with all new books, zines and Gargamel Kaiju figures (the finest Japanese goofy monster toys). The gallery is bigger and totally free to change shape with each new show. More space, more driftwood, more river rock and more fun.
